Empowering Women and Girls
Sudan
Following the decade long conflict in Darfur, Sudan, the State of Qatar, through Qatar Fund for Development, has allocated US $500 million for the development and reconstruction of Darfur focusing on governance, reconciliation, reconstruction, and economic recovery as foundations for peace and stability. The different projects carried out have targeted several essential components for human development and peacebuilding.
In collaboration with the United Nations Darfur Fund, QFFD has supported the establishment of numerous centers for promoting reconciliation and co-existence for sustainable peace. Since 2016, 11 centers have been established to train and support women on leading traditional justice mechanisms, including dispute settlement and mediation, through ongoing workshops and forums. In addition, over 500 rural courts were constructed and handed over to beneficiaries to ensure increased access to justice. With the support of the centers, community forums are being organized around the five states of Darfur to bring traditional justice mechanisms back and to ensure that women are participating for the first time.

Armed conflicts leave behind combatants whose reintegration is key in peacebuilding efforts. On that basis, QFFD has supported a reintegration and stabilization program that established in partnership with the United Nations Darfur Fund. The programme operates in West, North and Central Darfur to facilitate social and economic reintegration of demobilized armed forces through the provision of livelihood support, with a focus on women, youth and special needs groups, of which more than 500,000 community members benefit. As part of this initiative, 3,150 ex-combatants, including 630 females, have been counselled, trained and provided with start-up grants to engage in various livelihood and income generation activities for economic re-integration.
